Change the Frame
What happens when the thing doesn't change but its frame does?
The research logic
Research specification
- Familiar condition
- Interpretations are experienced as properties of the object rather than as relations among object, context, observer, and frame.
- Underlying structure
- The frame that organizes meaning can disappear from awareness once an interpretation feels obvious.
- Alteration
- The object stays materially stable while its context, naming, sequence, or surrounding frame changes.
- Hypothesis
- If the object holds still while the frame moves, participants may become more able to separate what belongs to the object from what the interpretive context is contributing.
- What it tests
- Conditional meaning. Situated interpretation. Framing as an operative condition.
- Encounter
- Participants work one piece of material through several frames, then exchange it so someone else continues without explanation and without restoring the original intention.
- Complication
- Reframing does not make every interpretation equally supported, and changing perspective resolves no conflict or structural disagreement on its own.
The object holds still while its context moves. How far does meaning move with it?
Applications: perspective-taking, problem-solving, organizational change. Runs at 60, 90, or 180 minutes. Standard capacity 30. Reframing is not treated as something that automatically resolves a conflict.

Host this Lab
Name the group, the context, and the question worth encountering. Charles replies directly.

Where this stream came from
Mindful Creative Labs grew from Charles Mindful Wellness’s earlier Mindful Creative Workshop practice, including a 2023 public-library workshop series at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, DC.
The current Lab was designed later, from the questions those workshops made visible, and does not reproduce them.
