Experiments in Being Together · Experiment 01
Unfinished
Nobody is required to finish, justify, optimize, or publicly explain what they are making.
The research logic
Research specification
- Familiar condition
- Making is organized around finishing, optimizing, explaining, and demonstrating productivity.
- Underlying structure
- Completion functions as the measure of legitimate creative value and disciplined participation.
- Alteration
- Completion loses its privileged status. Participants may stop, leave work incomplete, ask for different forms of company, and witness fragments without requiring justification.
- Hypothesis
- If completion stops measuring legitimate creative participation, participants may relate differently to unfinished work, to one another, and to their own judgments.
- What it tests
- Conditional emergence. Conditional agency. Productivity and completion as social conditions. Consequence without conventional completion.
- Encounter
- Participants bring work in progress into a shared studio, stop wherever they stop, ask for whatever company they want, and witness each other’s fragments without requiring justification. Incompletion becomes the material of a collective installation.
- Complication
- Removing completion pressure makes unfinished work no more meaningful, pleasurable, or sustainable on its own. The event must not quietly become a productivity workshop measured by how much work people return to afterwards.
A studio party where nothing has to be finished, explained, or justified.
Protected communal time for anyone whose work has been interrupted by isolation, overwork, caregiving, fear, or lack of space. Incompletion becomes the material of a collective installation rather than private evidence of failure.
The public artifact is an opt-in museum of fragments: photographs, excerpts, sketches, process notes, or anonymous descriptions of unfinished work. The content of anyone’s work is not collected as research data.

The ask
Host it or hear when it runs
Venues, festivals, and organizations can host this work. Everyone else can leave an address for the first public date.

Where this stream came from
These experiments grew from questions first made visible through COURAGE: Nude Yoga, a recurring Charles Mindful Wellness Practice Site.
COURAGE made participation, privacy, observation, consent, refusal, and the rules of the room visible as design material.
This work alters one of those social conditions deliberately.
