Experiments in Being Together · Experiment 04
Social Weather
Nobody has to answer “How are you?” with a conventional emotional label.
The research logic
Research specification
- Familiar condition
- “How are you?” is answered through conventional emotional labels or personal explanation.
- Underlying structure
- Internal states are expected to be individually named, verbally disclosed, and made legible to others.
- Alteration
- Participants may express internal weather through color, texture, sound, posture, movement, symbol, light, or a privacy-preserving digital interface.
- Hypothesis
- If internal state can be expressed metaphorically and multimodally, participants may communicate something meaningful while keeping more ambiguity, privacy, or interpretive control.
- What it tests
- Conditions of disclosure. Metaphor as participation. Opacity. Embodied and nonverbal communication.
- Encounter
- Participants express internal weather through color, texture, sound, posture, movement, symbol, light, or a privacy-preserving interface rather than a conventional emotional label. The gathering’s collective mood becomes a shared, anonymous, responsive artwork.
- Complication
- Metaphor produces no automatic safety, truth, or emotional accuracy. The work is no mental-health assessment, emotional diagnosis, or clinical intervention. The collective display must never make it possible to infer an individual’s private history or changes over time.
Internal states expressed through color, texture, sound, and movement instead of words.
Space for people who prefer metaphor, movement, or privacy over direct disclosure. The gathering’s collective mood becomes a shared, anonymous, responsive artwork rather than a round of self-reports.

Where this stream came from
These experiments grew from questions first made visible through COURAGE: Nude Yoga, a recurring Charles Mindful Wellness Practice Site.
COURAGE made participation, privacy, observation, consent, refusal, and the rules of the room visible as design material.
This work alters one of those social conditions deliberately.
