Experiments in Being Together · Experiment 02
One Question All Night
The gathering refuses the pressure to cover many subjects and remains with one public question all night.
The research logic
Research specification
- Familiar condition
- Social and civic conversations move rapidly across topics and reward verbal speed, range, novelty, and confidence.
- Underlying structure
- Breadth becomes evidence of engagement while duration, repetition, silence, and uncertainty read as stagnation.
- Alteration
- The entire gathering stays with one public question across multiple media and modes.
- Hypothesis
- If a group stays with one question long enough to meet it through multiple forms, responses may become more differentiated, embodied, contradictory, or specific than rapid verbal discussion produces.
- What it tests
- Temporal conditions of inquiry. Sequence. Multimodal participation. Sustained attention as a social condition.
- Encounter
- Guests encounter the same question through dance, movement, paired conversation, writing, music, visual art, food, silence, and collective composition. One sentence becomes the score for an entire social environment.
- Complication
- Duration guarantees no depth. A weak, overexposing, culturally careless, or emotionally coercive question stays weak no matter how long the group sits with it. Each edition uses paid community advisers to assess cultural relevance, emotional load, accessibility, and whether the question invites discovery rather than demanding disclosure.
Gatherings move fast across many topics and reward quick verbal range. This one does not move.
The question is never chosen casually. Each edition uses paid community advisers to assess cultural relevance, emotional load, accessibility, and whether the question invites discovery rather than demanding disclosure.

The ask
Host it or hear when it runs

Where this stream came from
These experiments grew from questions first made visible through COURAGE: Nude Yoga, a recurring Charles Mindful Wellness Practice Site.
COURAGE made participation, privacy, observation, consent, refusal, and the rules of the room visible as design material.
This work alters one of those social conditions deliberately.
